Raja Mohamed, Director, Centre for Islamic Cultural Research, Jamal Mohamed College and Former curator of Pudukottai Government Museum on 29th September 2022 at the Economics Seminar Hall. The Guest speaker highlighted the economic prosperity of Coromandel Coast, the southeastern coastal region of the Indian subcontinent during 19th Century. He explained how the international trade played a significant role in the success of Indian merchants. There were 48 sea ports established by various colonial invaders mainly for international trade in Coromandel region out of which 28 of them are in current Tamil Nadu state. He mentioned that the textile and leather industries were performing outstandingly by producing high quality products at cheaper costs. He specifically mentioned the familiarity of “Nagoori Blue Cloth” in the international market. He pointed out that the rulers of coromandel coast allowed invaders for trade with a Laisez Faire policy which lead to opening up of international markets and later resulted in transfer of governance to the British Capitalists. During the last quarter of 19th century, the Indian merchants were not able to face the stiff competition with European invaders due to discriminated tax policies of British Government and high production costs which lead to the Swadeshi Movement and freedom struggle.
