As a part of Pre-Congress Symposium on Advances in Arts, Social Sciences and Sciences: Swaraj India Perspective, a parallel session was organized by the P. G. and Research Department of Economics, Jamal Mohamed College in the Economics Seminar Hall on “Impact of 75 years of Economic Development on People of Swaraj India” delivered by Dr.S.M.Suriya Kumar, Adjunct Professor of Economics, Bharathidasan Institute of Management, Tiruchirappalli. The session started with Six Economics students sharing their views on 75 years of Economic Development of India. The guest speaker started his lecture by acknowledging the views of the students and paid a tribute to John Maynard Keynes view on economists and politicians. He has explained the economic growth of India by dividing it into six phases as 1950-66, 1966-80, 1980-91, 1991-96, 1996-2014 and 2014 deviation over the role of state respectively. He was appreciating how India attained self-sufficiency in food production through Green Revolution and the agricultural sector turning into a market economy today. He pointed out that India failed to focus more on Industrial sector as compared to China which focussed on mechanizing agricultural sector and advancing industrial technologies leading to attain a superior position among global nations. According to him, after 2014 Indian State deviated from its role of driving economic development and was trying to hand it over to the private sector which proved wrong during the COVID pandemic period as the private sector failed to provide health services at a large scale. He concluded by insisting the students to update themselves in the economic affairs of the nation and show their patriotism by providing valuable policy suggestions for the country.
