Department of Economics
The P.G
and Research Department of Economics was started in the founding year of the
College in 1951 with B.A. Economics course. In the year 1963, Post Graduate
course in Economics was started. Research Programmes M. Phil., and Ph.D., were
started in the year 1998. At present the student strength of the B.A., and
M.A., Programmes is 205. The department has produced 57 doctorates and more
than 200 M.Phil graduates. The department was sanctioned with 15 Minor Research
Projects from UGC and Malcolm & Elizabeth Adiseshiah Trust. The department
is proud to have 7 faculty members who are doctorates without SLET/NET, two
faculty members are SLET / NET qualified and also possess PhD, one faculty
member is SET/NET qualified. The students of the department of economics are consistently securing Ranks in
the ‘Combined University Rank Examination’ conducted by the Bharathidasan
University for more than a decade. This merit has attracted many NRI students
and outside Tamilnadu especially from Kerala, Kashmir and Lakshadweep to study
in the department of economics. Our department faculty member has received best
teacher award and also awarded with “Young Economist Award” by Association of
Economists of Tamil Nadu.
The excellent infrastructure facilities available in the department includes the Wi-Fi facility, combined computer lab, well established library with more than 7000 books, well-equipped seminar hall and 3 class rooms are with LCD projectors. The typewriting institute at the college level is under the supervision of the department of Economics.
Vision
To become a social and intellectual hub for learners of economics by providing a curriculum for exploring the economic analysis and imparting critical thinking of contemporary complex economic issues.
Mission
► To train the students with required skills for self employment and to build self confidence with a positive frame of mind.
► To provide contextually relevant economics education with research orientation for nurturing the students’ talents and to enhance analytical and decision making skills.
► To give a global perspective by offering value based education for social transformation and also to make them productive and informed citizens.
