Department of History

 Established in 1951, The Department of History was one of the founding department of Jamal Mohamed College. When the department was established it was named as Islamic History department and over the Year the Department was converted into Politics and Public Administration in 1967 and it was affiliated to the University of Madras. Later on the Department of Politics and Public Administration was converted into the Department of History in the year 1976. The department was affiliated to the  Bharathidasan University in 1982. Additional courses were introduced in the academic year 2005-2006. The U.G.C. sponsored Career Oriented Programme on Tourism and Travel Management was approved on 16th December 2004. The Bharathidasan University approved M.A. History postgraduate course on June 6, 2005. Research Course M.Phil, was introduced in  2007 and in 2016-17 Ph.D Programme was also introduced.

The Department of History Provide an environment in Which all who study here can thrive and achieve their potential and do the best to the society. The Department also provides a distinctive education of awareness about the differing political, cultural, social and economic structures of the Past and how they interrelate with present scenarios. Student can also study  History of Tamil Nadu, Indian History, European History, American History, History of the Arabs and International relations in elaborate manner. Students are also encouraged to adopt Various extra Credit Courses to enrich their Knowledge in different field. Over the years, its alumni have gone to become notable and renowned Public Servants and Academicians.

To make the students analyse the various political, cultural, social and economic structures of the Past societies and creating awareness for societal changes. 

To motivate the students community by promoting personal interest and focusing on  different historical approaches. 

To strengthen the new dimensions in research activities  to create history and better society .
